Education and Child Rights Support in Ghana

ICT Partner, Youth Alive, is based in Tamale in northern Ghana. Beginning as a response to the numbers of street children in the northern areas of Ghana, Youth Alive expanded its work to prevent street involvement by children and to provide support to other vulnerable children and youth by removing obstacles to their education and helping them sustain school attendance. Youth Alive work to address forced and early marriage, child domestic work, child labour, violence in the home and in schools and community through strategies to reduce violent behaviour, raise awareness among parents, and schools’ personnel and community leaders of children’s rights including the right to an education and the right to live free from abuse and fear. Youth Alive also works to support children with disabilities, children who have been abused, HIV/AIDS impacted children and those children labelled as “witches”.

Work is in rural and urban areas, where poverty is the largest factor behind the difficult lives of children and their families. Youth Alive works to improve the lives and restore the self-esteem of vulnerable children/youth and vulnerable women to facilitate their reintegration into society so they can contribute to the development of their families, and their communities.
