Our Mission

The International Children’s Trust was founded in 1967 by a group of individuals who felt strongly that children should be given the best chance possible in life. They wanted to make a difference to individual children whose lives were severely affected by poverty.

Since then, the International Children’s Trust has sought to create real and lasting change in children’s lives by tackling the root causes of child poverty. We have done this by working with some of the most vulnerable children in each community who face abuse, destitution and discrimination.

We continue to tackle the physical, educational and emotional barriers to a child’s development and work to create strong family and community support structures. We work to prevent children from living and working on the streets.

Why do we exist?

In this era of relative global prosperity, it’s sobering to learn that 100 million children* are living in such adversity that they choose the street as their ‘best’ option (*UNICEF’s best estimate).

Sometimes it is a question of sheer survival. Once on the streets, girls and boys face brutality, discrimination, deprivation and sexual violence. In towns and cities across the world, this is a horrifying reality for children in street situations – one that we refuse to accept and are committed to overturning.

What do we believe?

A child’s life will not be changed unless you change the environment around them.

We can change children’s lives forever by intervening early and giving them the support and skills that can change their future.

Short term fixes don’t break the cycle of poverty or fundamentally change lives forever.

Solutions are unique to every child, family and community. Working with local partners on the ground ensures we can better understand local needs.

Without the International Children’s Trust we would not be able to do what we are currently doing in the communities we are working in.

Kelly Mostert | New Life, local partner in South Africa

I very much appreciate the input from the International Children’s Trust, their questions and how they confront us with ‘Why this? Why that?’.

Gerrie Smit | New Life, local partner in South Africa

Because we do monitoring and evaluation all the time, it creates a lot of new learning that feeds into new practice and empowerment strategies.
